With the Heart and the Mouth

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Romans 10:10

There’s something so gentle and beautiful about the way Paul explains faith here. He reminds us that faith isn’t just a quiet thing tucked away in our hearts or a loud thing we say with our mouths—it’s both. It starts deep inside, where we begin to recognize who Jesus really is. And when that truth settles in, something shifts. We begin to feel the weight of our sin, not as condemnation to crush us, but as a gentle tug pulling us toward the One who heals, forgives, and restores.

As we draw closer to Jesus, we begin to lean more on His strength—especially during moments of temptation, discouragement, or doubt. The Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the beauty of God’s Word in ways we didn’t see before. And slowly, as we spend time looking at Jesus—His purity, His kindness, His humility—we loosen our grip on self-reliance. We rest a little more in Him instead.

But that doesn’t mean the journey is without battles. There are days when the enemy presses in close, whispering lies, trying to convince us that we’re not fully accepted by God. And honestly, there are days when those lies feel loud. Yet every time we choose to cling to God’s promises, we find ourselves pulled back into the warmth of His love.

When God’s grace begins filling our hearts, it naturally spills out into our words. We speak with more thoughtfulness, more gentleness, because our hearts are being shaped by the One we belong to.
Sometimes, though, we weaken ourselves without even realizing it. We rehearse our frustrations, our disappointments, our hurts. And the more we think about them, the bigger they seem. The enemy loves to turn our focus inward—making us feel overlooked, unappreciated, or alone—until we find ourselves walking at a distance from Jesus.

But here’s the thing: the way back is simple. We remember what God has already done. We trust in Christ’s righteousness. And we meet every lie the way Jesus did—with the Word of God: “It is written.”
This week, let’s try catching ourselves when our thoughts start drifting toward frustration or discouragement. Instead of letting those thoughts grow, let’s gently redirect our hearts by speaking one promise from Scripture out loud. Just one. Let it interrupt the lie and anchor you back in truth.
