Power, love and a sound mind.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)
Fear can overwhelm our minds with unpleasant thoughts. Whether it’s based on what you see or hear in the news or real-life experiences, fear can be damaging to one’s mind if not treated. The power and peace of God can overwhelm that fear in our minds to give us the strength we need to overcome our mental obstacles. Boldness is a mark of the Holy Spirit, which dwells in the hearts and minds of all believers.
This verse is a reminder to Christians, no matter how old or young, that all cowardice, all dread of danger, all shrinking from doing one’s duty for fear of man’s displeasure, proceeds not from the Spirit of God. Jesus never lived a life being afraid of what others might think of Him. He lived according to the will of God and to fulfill God’s purpose. That is how we as Christians should live, since Jesus was the ultimate example of a godly lifestyle.
God has also given us the power of self-control through His Holy Spirit. It works, in those to whom it is given, power, or strength, to fight the good fight. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God gives us the power to endure and to resist temptation. Love conquers all and that is truly the case with God’s love.
This week, pray for a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. Let the presence of God comfort you and help you fight your daily battles against fear.
