… where your heart lies …
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 (ESV)
As part of His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus talks about the heart of man and where our true loyalty lies. If we treasure something, our focus is on that thing and nothing else. Our heart and mind should be focused on Christ and that is what we should treasure over anything else. If my mind is fixed on something, it never goes away. If my mind is fixed on Christ, it could change my decision-making in a righteous way that is pleasing to God.
The words imply the truth, afterward more definitely asserted, that it is impossible to serve God and man as noted later in the chapter in verse 24. Men may try to persuade themselves that they will have a treasure on earth and a treasure in heaven also, but in the long run, one or the other will assert its claim to be the treasure and will claim the no longer divided allegiance of the heart.
We have to remember that this earth we’re living in is temporary. Money, cars, house, and other small possessions will eventually disappear forever. God will never disappear. He should be our treasure because He will be with us for an eternity if we choose to put our life in Him. Our heart should follow God and make Him our treasure.
This week, pray about where your heart lies and if you need to make a change. Seek God and make Him more valuable in your life than all of your other possessions.
