A New and Better Covenant

Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Hebrews 9:13

Under the old covenant, commonly referred to as the Old Testament, the Jews were required to offer up animal sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. However, when Jesus died on a Roman cross, He became the mediator of a new covenant.

The inheritance promised in the old covenant was an inheritance of the land of Israel. God promised to give the Jews the Promised Land and to bless their obedience during their lifetimes.

The promised inheritance in the new covenant is an inheritance in the eternal kingdom of God. Those who are “called of God” have an inheritance in the eternal kingdom. The writer to the Hebrews states that this is possible because the death of Jesus redeems his people from the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant.

If you have received Christ as your Savior, your sins are covered. You are redeemed from the penalty of the transgressions committed by you. The death of Christ made redemption possible; his resurrection from the dead solidified redemption.

This week, if you have never personally received God’s gift of grace for the forgiveness of sin and trusted in the finished work of Jesus, there is no better time than now to yield your heart to God in belief. If you are a believer in Jesus, take some time to meditate on the transforming power of God in your life.
