The Secret to Standing Firm

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

Have you ever felt like you were fighting a losing battle against a bad habit, a recurring fear, or a heavy cloud of discouragement? We often dive straight into “beast mode,” trying to white-knuckle our way through temptation or stress. We focus so much on the “resisting” part that we end up exhausted. But James 4:7 offers us a different rhythm. It’s a two-step process, and the order matters more than we realize.

First, we exhale. The verse begins with “Submit yourselves to God.” In our culture, “submission” sounds like losing. But submission is actually where we find our strength. It’s like a soldier stepping behind an indestructible shield. When we submit, we’re essentially saying, “God, I can’t do this on my own, I’m putting myself under Your protection and Your plan.” It’s a moment of surrender that brings immediate peace.

Then, we stand. Once you are tucked safely under God’s authority, the second part happens: “Resist the devil.” Notice that the verse doesn’t say “fight him until you’re bloody.” Because you’ve submitted to the Creator of the Universe, the enemy doesn’t just back away—he flees. He has to, because he isn’t just looking at you anymore; he’s looking at the One you belong to.

Take a moment for reflection. Is there something you’ve been trying to “resist” without “submitting” first? Maybe today is the day to stop the tug-of-war. This week, instead of focusing on how big the problem is, try focusing on how big your God is. Step into His shadow, agree with His truth, and watch how the shadows start to scatter.
