A strong tower
Proverbs 18:10 (ESV)
The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.
In Biblical times, every major city or kingdom had a strong tower. It was located in a central place in the city where citizens can find safety. Geographically, it was a good strategy, because the enemies would attack the borders of the city, where there was usually a massive wall. That gave people time to flee toward the middle of the kingdom, which is the farthest possible area from the surrounding enemies. Once they got to the tower, archers would pick off the enemies swarming toward them. By the time the invading army reached the tower, their numbers meant nothing, as the kingdom’s guards would take them out one by one at one central location.
This proverb uses the image of a strong tower to show that God must be the center of our focus and our life. He can provide safety and comfort when we are under duress. Those who have faith in Him will be safe. Figuratively, we tend to build our own city in our mind. We build mental structures that please us and make us comfortable and safe. We build walls and barriers. We build dreams and aspirations. However, nothing we build or create can save us from our sin.
The good news is that God can be our refuge, our strength and our strong tower. He provides shelter, comfort, support and a way to protect us from our sin. Jesus died on the cross so that we can be rescued from our sin. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can be free from our spiritual enemies. Whenever we feel surrounded by problems in our life, we can run to God, who can deliver us from whatever life throws at us.
This week, be encouraged by the fact that you can run to God as your strong tower whenever you’re in trouble. Ask God to come into your life, so your heart, mind and soul can be free in Him.
