Helping the Helpless
James 1:27
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
In Biblical times, orphans and widows represented the lowest parts of society. Without fathers and husbands bringing home financial stability, these outcasts of the community had no way to feed themselves or make a living. That is why God calls us to help those in need.
When we help others below ourselves, it demonstrates humility. Jesus Christ showed humility by coming down from heaven and taking the form of a man to save us from our sins. In our world today, there are plenty of people who need our help. Whether we are just getting by in life or we have been blessed financially, there’s always someone we can reach out to. We can help those who are unable to help themselves.
God calls us to go out into the world and spread the gospel. How are we to do that if we can’t help those around us? Being there for people when they need it the most is what a Christian is supposed to do. God did it for us, so we have to do it for others around us. It is our mission as Christians to reach out to our local neighbor or travel across international borders to spread the love of Christ. How do we do that? By helping those who cannot help themselves.
God gave us the power and gift of salvation not to keep it to ourselves. He wants us to share it, especially with those who are unable to access it. People haven’t been told the good news or at least not in their native language. It is our job as Christians to be there for others when they need the love of Jesus Christ. God gives us hope every day through His word. Let’s share that hope with the world.
This week, pray about how you can help the helpless. Be there for one another just like Jesus Christ intends it. Only then will we show the love of God in an effective manner.
Right now, Grace Ministries is doing this very thing at Naco, Sonora in Mexico. We are helping an orphanage right across the border of Arizona. Please pray for us as we go on mission for these children, as we will be there to minister to them all week.
