A Mustard Seed
“And the Lord said, ‘If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.’”
Luke 17:6 (ESV)
A mustard seed is .039 to .079 of an inch in size, yet the plant can grow up to 20 or 30 feet tall and wide. As we read Luke 17:6, Jesus tells us you only have to come to Him with just a little bit of faith, the size of a tiny mustard seed.
How or where do you find this little mustard seed of faith? God does not make things so difficult as to make it out of reach or so that you can’t find it. You don’t have to go looking for it.
In Romans 12:3, the Apostle Paul says God has already assigned us all a measure of faith. In Romans 10:17 it says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
It is the Word of Christ that produces faith. Someone could receive faith while hearing a song of worship or a sermon teaching the gospel, or by reading about Jesus in the Bible. Any time the true gospel of Jesus is communicated, there is potential for faith.
When we have this gift of faith, we have a calling or need to grow it. Just like the mustard seed grows with nurturing, feeding and caring. One important way is to immerse ourselves with prayer and reading the Holy Scriptures. As God changes us, we will learn to develop the fruit that comes from the Holy Spirit, who dwells in all Christians. In prayer and study, our faith can grow upward and outward into the full presence of the living God.
This week, take a moment to ask Jesus for His help. Jesus says to trust in Him and He will make your path straight.
