And David said, ‘The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’ And Saul said to David, ‘Go, and the Lord be with you!’

1 Samuel 17:37 (ESV)

In this passage, David approaches King Saul about facing Goliath, a giant Philistine. The conversation starts out with Saul underestimating David’s capabilities to go up against such a formidable foe. David responds with confidence in the Lord, something Christians can count on each and every day.

As a shepherd for his father’s sheep, David protected the animals from predators such as lions and bears. He said to Saul that if he could fend off the lions and bears from his father’s sheep, he can also fend off Goliath from God’s people. However, David was sure to include the Lord in his actions.

Without God, we can only rely on our own strength, which isn’t enough. David praised God and credited Him for helping him defeat the predators from attacking his sheep. As we know from the old story of David and Goliath, God also helped David defeat the Philistine and saved Israel.

God gives us the strength we need to take on any foe in our lives. We have to rely on His power to protect us. This can be done spiritually as well. When Satan tries to tempt us or deceive us from obeying God, we can pray to God and call on Him to help us. Only then will He deliver us.

Through our prayers, we can connect to God. Our conversations with Him help strengthen us spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. We can have confidence in Him that we can trust Him through every situation we face each and every single day. If God can deliver David from lions, bears, and a giant, think of the many miracles He can perform for you.
Jesus is our shepherd who protects us and defends us from evil. Through the power of God, He saved us from our sins through the death on the cross and the resurrection from the grave. His good news gives us hope in a savior. His power is strong enough to deliver us.

This week, pray about how you can rely on God to get you through the troubles of your daily life. Ask Him to be with you every step of the way, so you can have the strength to face your battles.
