On overcoming temptation in your life
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15 (ESV)
Temptation afflicts us all. Even Jesus faced temptation. When you are tempted to sin, don’t feel as though you are the only person who has ever had to deal with that particular temptation.
The writer to the Hebrews tells us that Jesus, our high priest, was tempted in every respect as we are. Yet Jesus was able to resist and overcome every temptation He faced.
In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus was tempted three different times by Satan. In all three instances, He used the Word of God to defend Himself against the snares of the devil. His dependence on the Father was all He needed to face the challenges set before Him.
Since Jesus overcame temptation, He can help you to do the same. When temptation comes your way, you have the option and ability to call upon Jesus to help you to withstand that temptation.
The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
God’s way of escape is Jesus as He is presented in the Bible. When facing temptation, open your Bible and follow the counsel of Jesus. He resisted all temptation and overcame the world without committing sin. He wants to help you in your time of need. All you need to do is ask.
This week, consider one temptation you face regularly and seek God’s counsel concerning that temptation. Pray that you can rely on the strength of God to get you through whatever challenge you face.
