Renewing our heart

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

2 Corinthians 4:16

You cannot outrun age. Our bodies weaken with time, and we can do nothing about that. We can try to remain fit, live a healthy lifestyle, and ensure that we take care of our bodies. However, our bodies will degrade over time regardless of how hard we try.

However, for those who are in Christ, the opposite effect happens with our inner self. Instead of degrading, our minds, hearts, and desires are continually being molded by the Holy Spirit. This process, called sanctification, makes us more and more like Christ as we continue in Him.

God uses several different means to build up our inner self. First, he uses the Scriptures. The Bible, the very Word of God, speaks to his people in a unique way. The reading and memorization of the Word of God creates within us a growing desire for the things of God. As Psalm 1 says, we should meditate on his Law day and night and, as a tree planted next to a stream, we will be built up.

Secondly, God uses the Church. The Church is designed to be a group of believers building each other up in godliness and holiness. We encourage and edify each other. And, if the time calls for it, point out areas in our lives where sin still maintains a stronghold.

Lastly, and most importantly, the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin and creates within us a desire to put that sin to Death and live our lives seeking after God. This is more than just our conscience. While the Holy Spirit uses our conscience in this process, His work is much more potent in our lives. He shapes our desires and causes us to hate our sins and love the Lord.

While our bodies crumble and waste away, God is renewing our minds and spirits day after day. We become more like Christ over time; regardless of our body’s age, our minds are made new.

Meditate on God’s word this week, align yourself with His Spirit, and fellowship with other believers. Through this, God will renew your inner self and make you more like Christ.
